Case Study: Circuit City

The site personalizes product listings depending on products viewed and purchased in previous site visits, categorizes items clearly, and enables customers to do side-by-side comparisons of similar items.

For each product, extensive information is provided on the site. CC does this by developing their own product information database rather than referring users to manufacturers' sites, which is largely necessary to support comparisons of disparate options.

Since there are a large variety of options (many models of VCR), the site enables customers to filter results by various criteria - price, brand, features, etc. - to locate an item that meets their desires.

Since rebates are common in consumer electronics, the site provides extensive information on rebate programs, enabling the customer to retrieve all the instructions and forms necessary to obtain rebates.

EN: These case studies went into granular detail, often about entirely unremarkable practices. I have documented only the unique or unusual details.
