Future Research
The present study has attempted to provide an overview of the current state of the ATM and Debit Card industries, and to attempt to address some of the more significant economic and public policy issues that presently exist. However, it s still a young industry, rapidly growing and changing, and doubtless there will be additional issues that arise as it continues to evolve.
The author identifies four key areas in which further research could more extensively consider the present issues and predict or avoid future ones:
- The potential antitrust implications of continued market concentration
- The degree to which the wholesale fee structure impacts smaller firms
- The justification for the central bank or other government agencies mitigating the disputes among firms as well as between firms and consumers
- The structure and relationships among various agencies that are involved in the oversight and regulation of the industry
